UAHS Architectural Photographic Archive

These photographs are part of a project to create a photographic digital archive for Northern Ireland. This project was born out of a desire to provide the widest possible access to an invaluable archive of building photographs held by Ulster Architectural Heritage Society (UAHS).

This free, easily accessible, online digital archive of the UAHS photographic collections will now provide full public access to this unique resource. This archive, of currently 3,000 images, will allow a variety of users, from students to architects, journalists to film makers, people and groups with a particular interest such as local architecture, to use this searchable database of historic and contemporary buildings – including listed properties and buildings in conservation areas.

This valuable untapped resource, spanning the whole of Northern Ireland, that illustrates our rich architectural heritage including buildings that have since been lost, buildings at risk and exemplar buildings that have been restored demonstrating good practice in the conservation and protection of our built heritage.

The bulk of the collection to date comprises photographs taken by Andrew McClelland during his time as Heritage Projects Officer with UAHS. Andrew was responsible for updating and adding to the Built Heritage At Risk Register Northern Ireland (BHARNI) for NIEA. Many buildings were visited and photographed multiple times, since 2003. His dedication (and excellent cataloguing of photographs) has helped make this feasible.

The project was made possible thanks to the NIEA Challenge Fund which has enabled UAHS to create a database, collate and upload the images on to Flickr. UAHS plans to continue to add photographs now that this resource has been established.
