I'm a self taught enthusiastic hobbyist photographer who started this wonderful hobby in 2010. I'm extremely passionate about landscape, seascape and wildlife photography and it certainly keeps me occupied in my spare time. I first started with seascapes at my local beach in Wembury, Plymouth, Devon, UK. It’s south west facing so I can watch the sun set out to sea in the Winter months. I consider myself very lucky living near the ocean, ,countryside and Dartmoor. I enjoy exploring the Southwest including the Jurassic coast and plan to visit more of the UK in the next few years.
I have enjoyed raising money for the British Heart Foundation selling my Calendars. In 2012 I completed a 5K Fun Run raising £4500 over the year. That doesn’t sound very far but please read on.
In December 2007 I suffered a major heart attack in the gym resulting in several open heart surgeries over 8 years including a double bypass and an implanted mechanical heart called a LVAD. I was literally battery powered for over 4 years while on the heart transplant waiting list. During that time I started learning photography which has definitely given me a focus to help overcome my health issues both mentally and physically.
Awesome news! In September 2014 I was given the 'Gift of Life', having a heart transplant. My thoughts are always with the donors family and friends and no words can express how thankful I am. In March 2019, Sept 2020, 2021 and 2022 I had stents to enlarge my constantly narrowing arteries. All is well for now taking a cocktail of medication and regular local and Harefield Hospital appointments. In December 2021 after being made redundant as a design engineer I’ve decided to retire at the age of 60 so now a man of leisure.
My passion for photography has continued to grow and with a new leash of life. I've been out searching for photograph opportunities in new places I couldn't reach before. In April 2016 I went on a campervan tour around the coast of Iceland and photographed the most amazing landscape witnessing the Aurora Borelis. The whole experience was totally inspiring.
Some of my images have been from Somerset, Dorset, Wales Waterfall Country and the stunning Lake District. I enjoyed researching and photographing butterflies locally during the Lockdown 1 of the COVID crisis while furloughed from work. My recent project is Woodlands and Forests which has been challenging find compositions. When’s there’s snow and mist in Devon I venture out at dawn to Dartmoor which is always spectacular conditions I’m really enjoying photographing . Recent outings in misty woodlands has been challenging in so many ways but pleased with some of the results. Finding a balanced composition is like ‘taming the chaos!’
Butterflies and fungi macro photography has been my recent projects.
“Photography takes my mind off the medical side of things. I'm sure this is why I put my heart and soul into making each image and try bringing them to life. I see life in a different way which is reflected in my images.”
I've always been an outdoorsy person and appreciated everything around me even during my antics over the years. I try to capture in camera our beautiful surroundings and always looking for that perfect shot.
Posting images on FlickR, viewing and commenting on other photographers images certainly inspires and encourages to improve my photography so I can attempt to capture light and nature at its best.
The equipment I use is the full frame mirrorless Canon EOS R6 Mark II and crop sensor mirrorless Canon EOS R7. My Canon lenses include the EF 16-35mm f/4 L, RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM, RF 100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM, EF 100mm f/2.8 L IS USM macro, and EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L. I also have a Samyang 14mm f/2.8 for Astrophotography . My tripod is a Leofoto LS-364C combined with a Manfrotto PRO ball and socket head. I do have a Manfrotto carbon fibre monopod but don’t seem to use that often. I swapped lens filter systems recently to MAVEN colour coded magnetic filters after backing a Kickstarter project. I still have the original Lee Filters 100mm foundation system including a Landscape Circular Polarising (CP) and Neutral Density (ND full and graduated). The IRND glass rectangular filters are excellent.
Post editing is done mainly in Adope Photoshop, sometimes Lightroom. Plugins are Propanel, Nik Color Efex Pro5, Topaz AI for sharpening and denoising.
I’m experimenting with raw presets to be creative and shorten the workflow time. I shoot in raw and print mainly from .tif files. All my social media images are watermarked and converted to low resolution 70dpi JPG.
I also enjoy videography and time-lapse movies and using my mirrorless cameras, Legria Camcorder and GoPro Hero4. For movie editing I use Pinnacle Studio 26 Ultimate and have just downloaded Capcut to try.
*Please do not be offended if I decline group invites.
*Please do not use any of my images on websites, blogs or any other media without asking my permission. It's just nice to be asked :-)
