This is my homage to the "play sculptures" created by the American artist and designer James Miller-Melberg in the 1960s and 70s that I played on, along with many of my friends, as a child.
Jim's father was a pattern maker in the Detroit area and taught him the trade as a young man. After serving in the Korean War, he went on to study art at the University of Michigan, independently in Europe and at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He took a position teaching sculpture and 3D design at the University of Michigan in the mid 50s. He then left U of M to start his own business, Form Inc., in 1960. To help finance his fledgling business, he worked at General Motors as a clay modeler. While there, he worked on Larry Shinoda's famous Corvette Shark concept car among others. Jim ran Form Inc. till 1981 when he sold his business to Wausau Tile. Wausau Tile is still making many of Jim's designs today.
Jim passed away peacefully at his home on the 14th of November, 2017 at the age of 88.
