Introduction

Lee Wen-Cheng’s reconstructed landscapes are symbolic allegories reflective of realistic cityscapes. His art originates from the observations and reflections from the city he dwells in, and through various shapes, transformations, symbolisms, and displacements, he deals with the real world with irony and subversion. Familiar cityscapes of Taiwan, such as high-rises, apartment buildings, windows, neon-lights, billboards, traffic lights, bridges, and Ferris wheel, are comprised of hybrid and complex architectural elements, and they appear like mechanical parts in Lee’s artwork. Like transformer robots that have turned into gigantic monsters, they emerge from the cityscape and lands once again. From which a sense of restlessness arises from the vital energies of the people within, and the various juxtaposed cityscapes also depict the distinct features of Taiwan’s urban setting.
