I am an amateur photographer and budding birdwatcher. I use a Nikon D3200 which, in all honesty, I am still on a learning curve with. (but it sure is a great tool/toy) I only use photo editing programs sparsely as I do crop most of my pics and sometimes I'll fix the exposure.
