Drag to set position!
I began my venture into serious amateur photography in 2006 with the purchase of a Canon 350D with kit lenses. As most do, I started shooting JPEG to get an understanding of what the camera was doing with regard to EXIF and once I got my head around this I progressed to RAW and have not looked back. Living on a 70 acre rural property near Port Lincoln at that time allowed me to shoot my favourite genre, nature - be it insects, birds or the landscape.
The purchase of a dedicated macro and ultra wide angle lens, coupled with an upgrade to a 40D allowed me to advance my skills and target more technically demanding subjects. I then upgraded to a 7D. I took a couple of gap years from photography and as of November 2023 decided to get back into it with the purchase of a Canon 5D Mark IV, Canon 400mm f/5.6L, Canon 100mm f/2.8L macro and Canon 16-35mm f/4L IS USM.
I joined the Port Lincoln Photography Club mid 2006 and was awarded Club Champion in my first and second years. I also entered into the Eyre Peninsula Photography Clubs regional competition winning Champion Print two consecutive years along with numerous category wins.
Being a member of the Australian Photographic Society (APS) at that time, actively participating in their online folios and this helped me significantly with improving my image quality and style given the advice and constructive critique by other APS members. I also was awarded a national winner in macro category with one of images of a spider. I’m no longer a member but occasionally look back at the Society and how it helped.
While not a celebrated nature photographer by way of sales and publications, I have had numerous published in different formats including:
- Biawak, the Quarterly Journal of Varanid Biology and Husbandry
- Adelaide and Monarto Zoo's Yellow-footed Rock Wallaby Exhibition
- Adelaide Zoo Conservation Ark
- City Port Lincoln, 'Golden Hour at Billy Lights Point' used as phone book cover
- Roxby Downs Council
- Landscape Photography Magazine
- Designinc Pty Ltd submission to Geelong Council
- f11 News
- A book by Ron Kandelaars, Victor Harbour - Down by the Seaside, with a two page spread
- A book by Peter McMillan, Caterpillars, Moths and Their Plants of Southern Australia
My images are a collection of my travels and residency throughout South Australia, Victoria and now Northern Territory as well as working remotely.
Please enjoy the images in my photostream and be sure to use the viewing tools like Flickriver, View my DNA or bighugelabs. Also, I appreciate the comments and favourites left on my posted photos which I do read and when able to, reply with thanks.
One final sentence, my genre as you have gathered by now is nature with a sprinkling here and there of man made stuff particularly old buildings and Australian heritage, hence if you follow me, I may not reciprocate particularly if your images are of mum, dad, the kids, the wife or hubby, the pet cat or dog, garden flowers, your neighbour or a plane, train and automobile.
Cheers and thanks for dropping by.
