I am an artist and teacher.

These days, I mostly use watercolor, colored pencil, sumi & fountain pen ink, pencil, cut paper and/or collage, acrylics, and a digital camera. I also create edible food art, make handmade books, and play with clay. Welcome to Turtle House Studio!
Some places I've lived:
Illinois, USA (Wilmette and Evanston); Arizona, USA (Flagstaff, Tucson, and Mayer); Spain (Salamanca); France (Aix-en-Provence, Annecy, and Paris); New Mexico (Santa Fe); Alaska, USA (camped and travelled by bicycle for 3.5 months); Japan (Kyoto and bicycle travelling, camping); California, USA (Monterey & Pacific Grove); Colorado, USA (Boulder); Massachusetts, USA (Boston); Georgia, USA (Athens); Charlottesville, VA; Ashland, Oregon; the BVI for a summer (lived on a sailboat), and I've bicycle travelled extensively in China/Tibet; Canada, Japan, US Southwest, US Mid-west, US West Coast, and France...
I love languages, cultures, and learning, and I try to see with the heart of a traveller even when I'm at home...
I speak, read, and write Spanish, French, and Japanese... and can sound out Hebrew to read it, though don't understand much (yet); I read and understand a lot of Italian and Portuguese, and have taken/studied some Hopi, Italian, and Chinese. I love the English language -- and literature -- and would like to learn more Sanskrit/Pali.
From April of 1993 to April 1, 2010, I lived with Yuki, my American Eskimo dog. Our black cat, Jesse (Yuki's little sister), was with us from Autumn 1995 until January 2010, and our completely awake, black & white kitten, Bodhi, was with us from October 2008 until Summer Solstice, 2009. They were the best furry family! I am so grateful.
Some of my favorite things, interests and practices:
The ritual of tea; teapots, trees, drums, snow falling, the Sonoran desert, oceans, flowers, breathing, flutes, bells, natural foods cooking and uncooking, fresh fruits & vegetables (organic; free of pesticides), clay, fire, Japanese brush calligraphy, cactus, the magic of math, languages, science, movies ("foreign" films, especially), creativity, singing, friendship, animals, starry nights, playfulness, cello (and Yo-Yo Ma), kirtan (especially Krishna Das), wide open spaces, blowing bubbles, rainbows, Shabbat, handmade dinnerware, clouds, monsoon rains in the desert, creosote, taiko, reading, writing, letters, art, artists, and the art of living...

Ah, sunflower. Gazing with loving attention upon the tortoise of Nicole's golden finger; How is that sister sun and brother moon can balance the elements that you might be that vessel of abundance that refreshes this sturdy and serene hearth? Is it the clouds that don't pass this place very often? Or the coos of compassion that are borne of this steady pot-throwing abdomen? It's all this and none.... Nicole's treasure is the host's daily movement through this world. While outwardly appearing commonplace and unadorned, in truth it moves the wind, the wild, and the wheel. Rejoice, and visit this miracle as you might your friend the mouse. With open hand and open heart, perhaps Nicole is you.....

Serenity and harmony is what I find at tortuga del bosque photo stream. Tea,meals, beautiful drawings, all come from a quiet inner space. Relax and enjoy the images.
