Hi there,

For many years I was a passionate [available light] photographer, infamous for bringing rather heavy equipment where others couldn’t bother – plus for wasting good money on professional grade film rolls, etc. Why not be normal and… …get a car or something? ;-D

Then DIGITAL photography came along. I fell totally in love with dirt-cheap shots with instant previews from the backside of the camera – as well as much easier computer-based post-processing. But in the mean time I had also become a family guy, so I really couldn’t bring myself to pay for neither expensive digitization of my old library of 35 mm dias/negatives – nor purchase a digital replacement for my old somewhat costly gear (a Canon new F-1 with tripod, cable release and three fixed lenses; 35 mm f/2, 85 mm f/1.2 and 200 mm f/2.8. For me, that’s close to the ultimate mix of focal lengths and speeds). The shameful thing is that I have trouble settling for inferior grade stuff, tending to wish for this list (…or better).

Nowadays, getting my hands on enough spare money (in order to feed that gadget lust) is still a dream. But if I had equipment of such uncompromized quality around, I might turn into my old nerdy photo-centric self; constantly capturing, capturing. So perhaps the current state – of having to shoot most pics via the cellphone cam – is just as well?

I also carry the framework for a FILM in my head. However, I have great respect for the many disciplines of film-making – it’s a far more demanding activity than ‘merely’ shooting stills – besides, it implies long-lasting coordinated team effort, instead of the freedom of working independently. So, producing that material will probably remain a dream. But don’t get me wrong here: dreams are nice, I feel no bitterness just because I can’t realize EVERYthing in this world :-)

Wow, you’ve read all the way down here? Well, in that case I should probably add that the gear talk above this point was only correct only until March ’13 (but I’ve decided to keep it, just for the sake of the story). Then – after years of setting aside presents and savings on a dedicated account (managed by my good wife) – I had enough to get what I had been wishing for! :-) Actually, I pretty much had to purchase it at this time, because Canon decided to discontinue their 5D Mark II (in December ’12), and the number of ‘new old’ cameras still available in the marketplace was diminishing.

NOW: Off to do some shootin’ …when I can. It worries me that I see fewer motives nowadays than before. But the joy is there, and I have a backlog of places to return to, at specific times of the day, and specific seasons. Another thing that bothers me: Post-production work is really time consuming. I already have too much of a backlog, and it’s increasing.
