Dave wouldn't listen to the bartender as he told him 23 beers was the limit for one night. Instead of leaving with dignity and an empty bladder, Dave decided to first water some of the fake palm trees we had in our smoking patio outside. It was his first trip to Las Vegas and even though he had a thick Canadian accent, we understood the myriad of sensations and emotions he must have felt being in such a wild and untamed land. As the lead security guard for exclusive The Rump Shaker club, my job was to help escort out those who we determined a disturbance to other guests. It was particularly sad that this was happening to Dave since not only was it his first trip here, but it was also only 2pm in the afternoon on a Thursday. Nonetheless, after zipping up, I escorted him to the exit. On the way there, and not shaking his hand, he told me that he was here to photograph the great American desert and that all his life he wanted to see it's beauty and grandeur. Unfortunately his rogue Canadian ways tripped him up and he was unable to control his liver-infused rage. This was the winter of 1971and since then I understand Dave has had quite a bit of success with his camera. He really is a good guy, just make sure if you want to buy him a drink, that you have a lot of money, and a urinal close by.

I've never done one of these, but I think it's time and there's no better candidate for a testimonial that I know. Dave is one of the most generous people I've met here on Flickr. Consistently kind and friendly, Dave shares his abundant knowledge and enthusiasm for photography with everyone. I've learned quite a lot from Dave about bokeh, strange cameras, HDR, met other great people through him... you name it, all spiced with his razor sharp and slightly dirty wit. But the real reason for coming back again and again to his photostream is Dave's artworks (apart from the fact he hasn't commented on any of my stuff in almost a week so I'm checking to see if he's died). I won't call them mere photos. Anyone can point a camera and get a photo. Dave's works are labours of love, delicately (and sometimes not so delicately) crafted to bring out just that something special. Dave's artworks are among the best that Flickr has to offer. It's a rare blessing to everyone who travels the Flickr highway to find such a great person who is also so talented. I'll stop now because if I don't he'll get a big head.

Obviously, there are many photographic styles to be found on flickr - some we find appealing, others not! Dave's photos easily fall into the first category - they are always interesting in terms of perspective, subject, composition, and processing. What's more, Dave has the rare ability to capture "real life" and convey the essence of the scene to the viewer. Looking at his pictures you just "know" what it feels like to be there - you can feel the wind on your face or the soft touch of the dog's fur in your fingers. And that is, indeed, a very rare skill.

Well Dave considers himself an amateur ... I think his images, particularly his landscapes, show otherwise. His photos of Atlantic Canada and beyond are well composed and his experimentation in the world of post processing always seems to pay off extremely well with the final image! He learns very quick and each time a new photograph is posted you can see the transition from this self-proclaimed amateur to someone I consider to be a great photographer whose work is only going to get better and Dave , with his keen eye, is someone to watch out for in the future!
