Tony Murphy has over 30-years experience working as a teacher, photographer and artist. He studied Fine Art during the 1980s under the watchful eye of sculptor Fred Conlon and subsequently qualified as a teacher of art, working in a post-primary school in Co. Monaghan for five years. There he developed and perfected his craft as a dedicated and enthusiastic advocate of art and visual education. Later, he returned to college and graduated with an MA in Fine Art from the National College of Art & Design in Dublin.

Since 1994, Tony has worked in the School of Education at NCAD on its Initial Teacher Education programmes. He lectures in Teaching Methodology, Visual Arts and Digital Media.

In recent years, Tony has divided his time between his teaching in Dublin and working as a professional photographer. He is noted for his expertise in a wide range of photographic genres that include studio portraiture, commercial, landscape, low light, event and documentary photography.

He operates from his studio on The Crescent in Boyle and lives nearby with his wife, Anne Marie and their four children in The Curlew Mountains.

"My work as a photographer developed from and through my art and education practice, the three strands coexist and intertwine like strands of rope. I use the camera to interrogate and comment on the world I see around me. My personal photography is for myself, I am present in every image. My interests concern people and landscape and explore themes of Irishness, identity, place, memory and time.

I want to make images that reflect my being part of the world today and visually celebrate the mundane and special moments that punctuate our lives. Images have such a powerful emotive quality that ferment and mature with time ... today's photographs are tomorrow's history ... and our history makes us what we are."
