Tom Hoops is relentless........ His pictures fill my thoughts and favourite box day after day. It is a difficult thing to combine incredible street photography, with wit and style....to then roll it into a forceful artistic identity. Tom is undoubtedly one of my favourite photographers on Flickr, and continues to inspire me with every new picture. His 'blacks'.... his 'whites'...... belong in greater places. Its been a pleasure to get to know him and his work....oh, and ps - he's also a very cheeky monkey! *** (ONE YEAR AND A BIT LATER......... Ps- He's 'Hoople-Doople-Tastic' and too bloody talented. I'm just adding this bit so my comment won't be lost under the bloody mountains of other testimonials :) heheheh) Love ya Hooples, so glad you're back on flickr !!!!!!! )

Tom, I am in awe of your work..beyond brilliant..you seek to capture things that most people just don't even see in their daily life..raw, gritty, life portraits...I am a huge fan.
If I was cornered and told I had to choose one single favourite photographer from my hours trawling through flickr it would be Tom Hoops. Raw, contrasty, gritty, varied work often with detail I can only dream capturing. Does it for me. Cheers Tom.
one of my top faves in the flickr cosmos

I found Tom through Kirsty who I found through Facebook (ahh the beauty of internet interaction) and have been so grateful to have seen some of his images. Every time I log in and seeing new images fills with me with a little rush to see what brilliance he has come out with next. Hope you don't mind me adding you… Read more

So far I have never popped into someone's photo stream and spontaneously responded by writing a testimony. So this is a first. As I cruise through Tom's shots I get the eerie feeling of seeing humans for what they really are: animals. Is this an insult? Of course not! This is what we are…the species of Homo Sapiens, such warm-blooded animals and certainly reptilian at times. With great intensity Tom makes me see straight into our human vulnerability with all of its imperfections and strength. This is terrifying and beautiful. His message to me is underscored through his black and white grit shots, dramatic angles and crop and marvellous use of light. Thanks. I will be back.

Tom’s photographs are the pictures I’ve always wanted to take: gritty, contrasty portraits that pack a punch like a shot of Jack and 151. What an incredible blend of negative space, lighting, composition and processing… I love the raw reality found in his photographs—and the empathy he has with his subjects. Beautif… Read more

Tom has a unique way of capturing the emotion hidden beneath the surface of all his 'subjects'. Sensitive and yet powerful street close-ups, make reviewing his latest work a true addiction. A great hunter of random souls and street light generous enough to share his shutter view with the rest of us.

Wittingly or not, Tom appears to have set out to achieve the impossible, that is to capture (some of) the essence of Thailand's complex society and its people. I want him to succeed. Mostly through black-and-white portraits that are at times only people's faces, mere flecks of light against a black background, he paints the darker side of Bangkok. The unglamorous, un-ritzy side that none of us really want to see but that old Thailand hands are so familiar with. There is struggle and sorrow in these pictures. But there are smiles too. And there is hope that shines through. Tom seems to have surprised some of us who thought we were beyond surprise when it comes to the City of Angels. He continues to do so. I am looking forward to more of the same but perhaps I am even more keen on a wider range of subjects, on trying to penetrate more and broader levels of Thai society capturing more of the essence of the Land of Smiles and what it means to be Thai. Bon voyage, Tom. Shanghai, 10 April 2008
