Evoking images of lazy Sundays at the beach or a drive down the Great Ocean road, Australian singer-songwriter Jess Lee and her band are re-writing the pop landscape with their unique female-lead, beachy-pop ballad sound.
A part of Melbourne’s burgeoning music scene for six years now, Lee’s music captures a timeless combination of moving melodies and evocative lyrics, featured on her newly released EP.
Jess says “I didn’t feel like I chose music initially, it chose me.” In an industry filled with disposable pop songs, Jess Lee attempts something deeper. Listing her influences as Missy Higgins, Eva Cassidy, Brooke Fraser and John Foreman, she says “I keep choosing music because it has the power to change hearts and the human experience. Alanis Morissette puts it so well: ‘People have made my songs their own. Regardless of the story or who the players are, the human state is something we all share’. I only hope our musical landscape rids itself of the destructiveness it is embracing, and starts to open its arms to something more positive for the world”, she says.
Produced by Jimi Maroudas (Eskimo Joe, Pete Murray, Tim Rogers), Jess Lee’s upcoming EP captures the sun swept feel that they felt the music called for. Jimi says “From the outset Jess and I spent a lot of time just talking about how her music made us feel and the honesty in her lyrics. Our focus throughout the recording was to stay true to that original sentiment and feeling we had, when Jess first played me her songs with just her vocal and an acoustic guitar.”
The key was then to find the right musicians to complete the story in each of Jess’s songs. Corey (acoustic guitar) had been playing and writing with Jess for some time. They wouldn’t have picked it, but his soulful and tender guitar playing and her heartwarming lyrics and melody are a perfect fit. Jess and Corey were then very pleasantly surprised to have a third member fit in so seamlessly, and Pete’s (base guitar and acoustic) creativity and discerning ear add to the groups refreshing uniqueness. As the three have toured, recorded with Jimi Maroudas at Sing Sing studios, rubbed shoulders with the likes of Jack the Bear and Ian "Dicko" Dickson, played with other musicians over the years and added others into the Jess Lee mix, they find that time and experience produces the unique-to-Jess-Lee sound they were all looking for.
Jess Lee’s five track EP that has just been released, is produced by Jimi Maroudas and includes feature tracks “Rescue Boat” and “Pieces”.
