My travels for work and family take me through a lot of towns throughout the Midwest and have I always been interested in small-town architecture. My dad would almost never come home the same way that he went somewhere and he loved hitting the back roads and small towns and I have fond memories of our trips and some of the old, out-of-the way places that are almost ghost towns now. For me the trip itself is as much fun as the picture-taking. We enjoy getting off the interstate and seeing the lesser-visited towns and rural churches and schools and finding a great burger or pizza in a small-town cafe or bar.

After 15 years on Flickr I am finding myself re-visiting some towns that I haven't been through in a while. It's surprising how many old buildings in this stream are now gone. I only wish digital photography in its current state had existed earlier. I was never all that great at 35mm photography and lost a lot of old slides when our basement flooded several years ago.

There's a lot of great photographers on here and it's great to see their work and find the things I somehow manage to miss when I'm out road tripping. There are certainly better photographers than me and I'm sure I could learn a lot more but the travel and exploring are the most satisfying aspects of the hobby for us.

Some of the map locations are approximate. Flickr's mapping system still leaves an awful lot to be desired. Some of the satellite maps are a little too grainy to pinpoint exact locations.

Commercial media outlets, please ask first and I will usually grant permission depending on your story and its angle. For business reasons there are certain topics that I may choose to not be associated with.

Comments, questions, additional information and corrections are certainly welcomed and I try to respond to as many as I can. With this many photos there's bound to be a few errors in labeling and source info and I will try to correct them right away. Thanks for visiting!

Hi Tom, My name is Janelle and I was wondering about getting your permission to print a photo. Pr. Katie Pals is leaving Trinity Lutheran Church in Thompson, Iowa to pursue another call and I wanted to frame a picture of the Church. I am not a pro photographer but I saw your pictures and thought maybe if I’d ask I could get a good sized one emailed to me. I am looking at the north side one with Trinity’s name and was wondering if I could use that one and if you could email me a link to download or email the pic itself? I couldn’t figure out how to do mail through flicker on phone so that is why I did testimonial. My email isjanelle_1014@hotmail.com Janelle
