The Bernice Garden is privately owned by Anita Davis, but intended for public use and is Located in Downtown Little Rock at 1401 South Main street at the southeast corner of South Main Street and Daisy Bates Avenue.
Description
The garden was created to celebrate the community. The garden hosts community events as well as the annual sculpture exhibit in an effort to foster community interaction and a sense of pride in the neighborhood.
The 150’ x 150’ garden consists of landscaped area utilizing native plants, with a crushed granite foundation for the artworks created by Arkansas artists. Next to the sculpture garden is a concrete patio, benches and approximately 20 parking spaces.
The garden may be reserved for events by calling Liz Sanders at 501-617-2511 or emailing bernicegarden@gmail.com. The sculpture exhibit is sponsored by the Bernice Garden Sculpture Scholarship fund and facilitated by the Arkansas Community Foundation and Village Commons.
The sculptures are selected by a committee that chooses from submitted proposals. The artwork represents or reflects the spirit, nature and history of Arkansas. The sculptures celebrate the sense of community and neighborly interaction and invite whimsy.
The guidelines for the selection are: the materials used can be traditional or alternative. Artworks must be able to stand up to the elements, interaction and potential vandalism and should be maintenance free. Artist/teams are responsible for all construction, delivery, installation, maintenance and removal of artwork as well as liability insurance. The sculptures will stay for a year and artists retain ownership of the artwork.
