The Térraba, or Teribe, are an indigenous group in the Puntarenas region of southern Costa Rica with a rich cultural heritage. We are located on approximately 9,000 hectares of our traditional land along the Térraba River, and we have survived off the land for more than 500 years. Our town of approximately 600 natives can trace its roots back to the pre-Columbian civilization. The Teribe Indigenous Cultural Association (Asociación Cultural Indígena Teribe) aims to rescue, strengthen and cultivate the Térraba culture, traditions, identity, respect to nature, the environment and spirituality.

We are a self sustaining agricultural community in southwest Costa Rica. Our land is being threatened by a hydroelectric dam project that would flood 10% of our traditional territory, destroy at least 300 areas of archeological significance, and displace our people.

Los Térrabas, o Teribes, son un grupo indígena de la zona sur, Puntarenas, Costa Rica, con un rico patrimonio cultural. Tienen aproximadamente 9,000 hectáreas al lado del Río Grande de Térraba, y son una comunidad que ha sobrevivido cultivando la tierra por cientos de años. El pueblo tiene aproximadamente 600 nativos cuyos ancestros eran pre-Columbiano. La Asociación Cultural Indígena Teribe trabaja para rescatar, fortalecer, y promover la cultura Térraba, sus tradiciones, identidad, naturaleza, y espiritualidad.

La comunidad de Térraba tiene agricultura mantiene la economía local y producen suficiente comida para todo su pueblo. Ahora nuestro gobierno quiere construir una represa que inundaría 10 por ciento de nuestra tierra, destruir mas que 300 lugares de importancia arqueológica y desplacer nuestra comunidad.
