Teku Teku ( stands for the sound of footsteps in Japanese)
Fukuoka, Japan, based volunteer group.
GOAL:
- start the discussion about the environment
- create awareness around environmental issues
- inform people about what they can do to make a positive change for the future.
APPROACH:
Through original activities that are fun to take part in and short movies ,that are easy to watch, we hope to get people interested and active in doing something positive for the environment.
OUR HISTORY:
November 2005 I (Mies Heerma) started the project with writing an article in a
local magazine called Fukuoka Now.In the article the idea for a car-free Daimyo was presented There was quite some attention for the idea and turned into a project called Teku Teku Daimyo. Besides trying to get Daimyo or a part of Daimyo car free, the project now also focused on preserving the unique atmosphere of the area. With “Daimyo-Walks”, “Daimyo-Photoshoots” ,meetings, radio interviews, newspaper articles and our own website we tried to achieve our goal.
At the end of 2007 I realized that the project was too difficult for me to handle and
at this point of time and I didn’t feel I was making much progress.
In 2008 I decided to change my approach and make monthly movies with an
ECO theme. Beside that we organized events; Beachcleanings,No Junkmail sticker competition, Bicycle promotion event.Critical Mass ( Bicycle parade for bicycle lanes) Movie showings, and joined the music events Isla de Salsa and Sunset Live.
In 2009 our Logo Eco-Chan was born and we organized the Teku Teku Tree Project, a tree on wheels moving around town.
WHY:
Its fun, healthy, a challenge, you will meet new people and doing something good for the planet will make you feel good about yourself!
