I’ve been interested in photography for as long as I can remember. I’ve been an active photographer since the early 1970s.
In the late 1970s, I put together a color darkroom in an upstairs kitchen. At the time, I was using a Nikkormat ELW, and shot mostly slides. I soon got into the wedding photography business, and then onto portraiture and other typical “hometown” photographer stuff. I used a medium format Mamiya 645 for this work. While this was a great discipline and gave me lots of darkroom hours, it dampened my creative impulses. In fact, by 1990 I was totally fed up.
In the spring of 2005, I purchased a Nikon D70 and slowly got back up to speed. In 2015 I upgraded to the 23 MP of a Nikon D-5500, I wore that camera out in 2017 and replaced it with a Nikon D-5600. As of December of 2019, I acquired a Nikon D850 and have been able to take great advantage of its full frame capabilities and the more intuitive controls.
I don’t miss film and believe that once the common digital camera broke 20 Mega Pixels, photography had entered a golden age!
I acquired a Nikon D850 in 2019 and look forward to its continued durabiltiy. I've also been able to utilize the D850s focus-shifting capability and, of course, the extra megapixels!
While I have both fond and miserable memories of darkroom, I believe my experience in processing film and prints, has given me a very useful perspective. It also has given me a great appreciation for Adobe Photoshop!
In the Spring of 2023, I took the plunge into mirrorless with a Nikon Z9. It wasn't much of a learning curve, and the only slightly weird thing was that the viewfinder went to sleep after a bit of time, which makes sense.
