Biography

In my family people have always had a passion for photography, practiced by the use of simple cameras, just to preserve the memory of a journey, of an event or of dear people, nothing more. At my baby’s eyes it was a real “magic” to see the world reproduced on those small prints thanks to complicated and mysterious " metal boxes " that soon became familiar to me. The real passion broke out, almost suddenly, in the mid- seventies , thanks to a university degree gift: a reflex, the silver and black "Pentax ME Super", with the classic 50mm, small and simple but, very professional for me, in particular for the wide strap that I had added to it.

Mostly I took pictures with BN and the subjects were a lot and various; I developed them in the bathroom, with great discomfort and by the help of a modest old equipment .

In 1984, as I was working for several years, I ventured a leap forward with the purchase of the dreamt " Nikon FE2 black" accompanied by some Nikkor lenses !

Abandoned the BN and fascinated by the wonderful colors that the film’s returned the Kodachrome slides 50 and Ektachrome 64 Professional, I devoted myself, with great passion, to landscapes, discovering the "magic" of the polarizing filter and “Cokin”.

I read everything I could, to improve my technique, admiring the unattainable images published on the books of the major Italian and international photographers of the time.

The passion and dedication were deeply strong and the results that I got seemed to be good, so I began to propose my photos in different Italian magazines and, with great pride and satisfaction, the first publications began.

In 1987 people from the magazine Geodes gave me my first job as a freelancer. I had to make a photoshoot on Bornhölm, a small Danish island in the Baltic Sea. After that, many others jobs followed. It was a very intense and rewarding jab. I had some professional proposals and I was tempted to accept, but in the end I decided not to “throw away” many years of study and a sure profession. I had gained by sacrifices. Slowly, I gave up the field of the photograph, provoking in me a kind of unconscious rejection: for several years I even did not touch a camera ... perhaps the fear of painful regrets!

After some time I realized, though, to have made the right choice and that the photograph, practiced only by passion, he had a completely different flavor than the stress, the sacrifices and responsibilities that generated produce photographic services; probably was not cut out for that job.

I became interested more about photography. Taken only occasionally use my beloved and now neglected FE2 only during a few trips, to bring back a memory, or to work , alternating with a small Coolpix . Then the turning point : in 2009, during a trip with friends to the Seychelles, I bought a “bridge” camera by Olimpus , to have a device to always light and immediate use , but the most powerful of the compact. On the way back I compared my pictures with those of his friend who had used an SLR, the Nikon D60, there was no comparison was made ... after a while I bought a Nikon D5000 with the 18-105 and with the ability to also use my Nikkor glorious analog ...

The virus, ever-present, he woke up!

After a while I discovered the world, totally new for me, the digital began to fascinate me, even for the great creative opportunities offered by Photoshop. I continued to devour photography magazines , to study and practice, then I moved on to the D300S and D700 until the current last turn, the transition to Canon!

The passion was back-handed , but with an imperative: photography just for fun!!

Autobiografia

Nella mia famiglia è sempre aleggiata la passione per la fotografia, praticata con semplici macchine fotografiche, per conservare il ricordo di un viaggio, di un avvenimento o delle persone care, niente di più. Ai miei occhi di bimbo era una vera magia vedere il mondo riprodotto su quelle piccole stampe grazie a complicate e misteriose “scatole metalliche” che, ben presto, mi divennero familiari. La vera passione scoppiò, quasi all’improvviso, alla metà degli anni settanta, con il regalo di Laurea: una reflex, la “Pentax ME Super” argento e nera, col classico cinquantino, piccola e semplice ma, ai miei occhi molto professional , in particolare per la tracolla non di serie di grandi dimensioni che avevo montato. Prevalentemente scattavo con pellicola BN e i soggetti erano i più vari; sviluppavo in bagno, con grande disagio e con una modestissima attrezzatura presa usata.

Nel 1984, lavorando già da alcuni anni, mi permisi un salto di qualità con l’acquisto della sognata “Nikon FE2 black” corredata di alcune ottiche Nikkor! Abbandonato il BN e affascinato dai meravigliosi colori che restituivano le pellicole per diapositive Kodachrome 50 e Ektachrome 64 Professional, mi dedicai, con grande passione, al paesaggio scoprendo la “magia” del filtro polarizzatore e dei Cokin. Leggevo tutto quello che potevo per migliorare la mia tecnica, ammirando le irraggiungibili immagini pubblicate sui libri dei grandi fotografi italiani e stranieri dell’epoca.

La passione e la dedizione erano forti e i risultati che ottenevo mi sembravano buoni, quindi incominciai a proporre “plasticoni” di dia tematiche a diverse riviste italiane del settore e, con grande orgoglio e soddisfazione, incominciarono le prime pubblicazioni. Nel 1987 dalla rivista Geodes ebbi il primo incarico come freelance per realizzare un servizio fotografico su Bornholm, una piccola isola danese nel Mar Baltico; ne seguirono poi molti altri. Fu un periodo molto intenso e ricco di soddisfazioni, ebbi proposte e fui tentato di passare al professionismo ma, alla fine decisi di non buttare a mare tanti anni di studio e una professione frutto di tanti sacrifici, lentamente quindi abbandonai l’ambiente della fotografia, provocando in me una sorta d’inconscio rigetto: per diversi anni non toccai una fotocamera… forse per la paura di dolorosi rimpianti! A distanza di tempo mi resi conto, però, di avere fatto la giusta scelta e che la fotografia, praticata solo per passione, aveva tutto un altro sapore rispetto allo stress, ai sacrifici e alla responsabilità che generava produrre servizi fotografici; probabilmente non ero tagliato per quel lavoro.

Non m’interessai più di fotografia. Ripresi solo saltuariamente a usare la mia amata e ormai trascurata FE2 solo in occasione di alcuni viaggi, per riportare un ricordo, o per lavoro, alternandola con una piccola Coolpix. Poi la svolta: nel 2009, in occasione di un viaggio con amici alle Seychelles, acquistai una bridge dell’Olimpus, per avere un apparecchio sempre leggero e di utilizzo immediato, ma più performante della compatta. Al ritorno confrontai le mie immagini con quelle dell’amico che aveva usato una reflex, la Nikon D60, non c’era paragone… Era fatta, dopo poco acquistai una Nikon D5000 con il 18-105 e con la possibilità di utilizzare anche i miei gloriosi Nikkor analogici… il virus, sempre latente, si era risvegliato!

Da lì a poco scoprii il mondo, per me totalmente nuovo, del digitale che incominciò ad affascinarmi, anche per le grandi opportunità creative offerte da Photoshop. Ripresi a divorare riviste di fotografia, a studiare e fare pratica; passai alla D300S poi alla D700, fino all’attuale ultima svolta, il passaggio a Canon!

La passione era tornata prepotente ma, con un imperativo: photography just for fun!!
