I consider myself odd, which shows within my work as there are some things that no one in my class has ever attempted to create. Inspired at the beginning of my teens with anime, manga and documentaries of serial killers, I was very much torn between the career path of Criminology or Art; but my passion for art was a chance I couldn't give up.

Criminology was a motive I knew I could use in my work and this inspired me to create a more artistic view of the disturbed, which was inspired by three particular artists – Marcus Harvey, Damien Hirst and Francis Bacon. Their work has influenced me and helped me represent my ideas in a greater way.

British artist Marcus Harvey painted a portrait of infamous Myra Hindley in 1995, which was made up of a mosaic styled prints from infant’s hands. This painting totally changed my way of thinking artistically. The disturbing memories of the children murdered are remembered by the handprints of infants used to make up Myra’s face. Using the idea of portraying guilt and presenting it into an image, Harvey used children’s hands to build up a portrait of Myra’s face as a symbol of her crimes.

This idea of using a material or tools to portray something extreme radically influenced my methods of using them in recent work, for example my blood paintings. Throughout my A2 coursework I have focused on medical and animalistic themes, so using real organs was an opportunity I couldn't miss out on. Whilst handling the organs there was a lot of blood, and the fluidity of blood is quite watery, similar to that of watercolor; which gave me the idea to paint in blood. The reason I painted children in blood is that all the children painted are family members when they were younger, myself included. Painting them in blood reflects the idea of family bonds, which led me to call my work ‘Blood Ties’. I also chose this title because I do not reveal the type of blood that is used and that in itself produces an atmosphere that is somewhat unnerving, which the title hints at.

Within the weird and in a way, profane ideas of my work, the next big step is how I can develop my work and improve it in the future. Similar to Damien Hirst, I have a variety and range of ideas of how I want to produce my work. From paintings to sculpture, there will be a wide spectrum to experiment and work from. If I were to build upon pieces of my work, such as my blood paintings, I would like to increase the size of them and experiment with a broader range of materials. One of my aims is to one day complete a large piece of work such as a sculpture or painting.
