My favorite photographers capture animals - they are my Flickr idols and because she knows, understands, and cares for animals as if they were family, because she knows what's in their hearts, tammyjq41 is one of my idols. Since she also volunteers at Zoo Atlanta, shoots photos for old folks' homes and the Atlanta Philharmonic Orchestra, tammyjq41 is also the most civic-minded photog I've met on Flickr - and one of the most generous. And her people photos prove something I've long suspected of animal photographers: it takes an understanding of human nature to successfully depict animals that are at least sometimes as wild. But give me her animals. tammyjg41 covers Zoo Atlanta, The Georgia Aquarium and the Atlanta Botanical Gardens regularly. She shoots photos of orangutans, gorillas, flamingos, panda bears and lily pads and their flowers that are as brilliant as any I've seen. Not to mention dozens of other animals, flowers, and insects. Whether it's a baby orang kissing its mother, a flypast of manta rays in one of the world's great aquariums, portraits of MeiLan, or Ivan, or Larry Bird, tammyjq41's photos dazzle and welcome you to a world which just happens to be filled with wild animals. And clearly it's her world too. And I want to take note of tammyjq41's frogs. The frogs I caught as a kid would never be mistaken for princes and the ponds they lived in were filled with skunk cabbages instead of lily pads. Whereas, from a kid's point of view, tammyjq41's frogs are flawless and the kind kids prefer to catch, even though many of tammyjq41's viewers insist on kissing these frogs and referring to them as princes - a hell of a burden to place on frogs - or on most males of any species, who tend usually not to be princes or particularly charming - which might just be the point of it all. tammyjq41's frogs happen to like being kissed, though, particularly since they know they're not princes - and they endure - and are beauties. Anyhow, you can't fake an animal photo. Either you see something in the animal worth capturing - and you capture it for others to see - or you don't. A good animal photo doesn't need additional commentary - and the great ones like the ones tammyjq41 takes tend to provide a complete story anyhow - even though they're wordless. Yes, tammyjq41 knows what's in the hearts of animals. She knows the ways they're oppressed and the ways they're free. This is a dichotomy common to all animals - not just those we're fortunate to have in Zoos - and it takes a photographer of tammyjq41's talent to capture it. And then to let it go again.

She was also the first of my Flickr contacts that I met in person and my visit to Atlanta remains one of the best trips I've ever taken. She gets all the credit for that! She and her husband were such gracious hosts - generous and genuine people. And I dare say, the best way - the ONLY way to experience Zoo Atlanta is with Tammy by your side. Her photography is always bright, cheerful, inspiring and creative. There isn't enough space for all of the adjectives that apply. Anyone who takes one glance at her photostream will be instantly hooked. She represents the best of Flickr - not just for her work but for the way she treats others.
