I think of myself as a serial fiber artist, callously dropping one technique in favor of another as my ideas evolve. The resurgence of craft, up-cycling and new knitting theory are very exciting to me as an artist. I enjoy repurposing discarded materials into something new and different. The attraction of opposites is a continuing theme in my work, often blurring lines of historical and modern fiber technique.
When I see a length of material or a ball of yarn, I instantly know what it should be. For me, art is the realization of the many ideas I see in my head. These ideas evolve from images that come to me as bright flashes of thought - occasionally as a full picture, sometimes just a series of elements - often just a blur. I mentally manipulate these mental pictures over and over in my mind, rearranging, re-ordering, adding and subtracting elements until my idea is clear enough to become something real outside of my head.
The easiest way for me to work through an idea is simply to begin. I find the material of my choosing and get to work, enjoying what happens as I go along. The process can take months to complete an individual piece. The more repetitive, detailed, or intricate the pattern I invent, the more alluring the project becomes to me. Every piece I make is like a stepping stone toward the next project in my imagination. All I have to do is re-shuffle my mental snapshots and begin work exploring what happens next.
