I'm a girl, sometimes sweet sometimes not so much ;). Well, I always get this "what can I say about me" tick in my right eye, ;P, when I find this kind of describe yourself request...
Lots of things describe me... girl, well, short girl, pretty nose, long hair, kind of chubby, latin american, italian background -but weird enough not to speak italian-, spanish background, lover of nature and justice, lover of bugs (yes, I really do love bugs, specially ladybugs & butterflies, that's the key behind SugarBug... my friends & family nicknamed me Coquito, little bug in spanish), actually lover of animals in general... I love to read... I love movies... I love art & beauty... l like to meet people, & I love to travel... but I really LOVE food ;)...
So, I come to know that we define ourselves through the things we achieved (or we do, or did), and because I'm a single girl with no kids, I use to say I'm a social psychologist, because that's my College major but, actually, since I graduated I'm realizing myself as a baker, because it is what I do everyday since I started baking as a job, almost four years ago.
Food is always an important reference in my family house, and desserts, well, are super-duper-hyper important (if such an expression is possible)... my mom specially, her aunts & my two grandmas, my aunts from my father side, all of them baked & still do... Amazing sweets, amazing flavors... did I say I love food? :)
Well... I do :)... and I love art... the things that we do, everyday, defines us... but not just a gender role (girlfriend, wife), or a family role (mother, sister), not just what we studied (engineer, biologist), but also what we realize we are capable of doing or what we have... we all have talents God gave us, to sing, to dance, to play an instrument, to be able to finish a 10k run... Mine? I can draw & paint...
I used to family trips to the U.S a lot, while in my teens, and I loved the bakeries, and specialty stores, and Godiva! (who doesn't)... That was my favorite gourmet boutique of all... I love the detail, the care, the beauty in every product they make... of course it´s not the only one, but it is one of my favorites...
Four years ago, in the usual "what am I gonna do know?" after finishing University studies, not happy with the job prospects ahead.. I was baking now and then, very often indeed, more than I did in the past, and I realized I liked it very much, as much as to bake for life... My mom (long time and skilled home baker) & I started this SugarBug enterprise...
One day I saw on the internet beautiful pictures of cookie wedding dresses, and I wanted to give that as a pretty present for a cousin's girlfriend bachelorette's party... and I studied the making, found a Martha Stewart's recipe for royal icing... made the templates... baked the cookies and I made for her some girly decorated cookies (wedding cakes, wedding dress, shoes, lipsticks, trousseau lingerie...)
They were my first decorated cookies (I think of them & I laugh to myself, they were sooo imperfect, but I thought back then they were sooo pretty and, in a way, I think they were) and since then I couldn't stop... So, I did more research, and more research, and I found a Whole (brave) New World... CakeJournal, Bakerella, Sweetopia, TomKat Studio... Beautiful Blogs behind amazing crafty ladies.. and one thing led to another, and then I wanted more, and more, and more... Cookie Crazie, Jill's Sugar Collection, Rosey Sugar Art, Nevie Pie Cakes, &, of course, The Sweet Adventures of Sugarbelle, and counting... Always making amazing sweets, loving and caring sweets, beautiful sweets... Those sweets (cookies) make me so happy!.
And here I am.. trying to develop a cookie artist identity myself... sharing my cookies attempts, with you.
