Our perception of the places Stygian Echo explores is like the hand drawn maps of a frontier mining claim. Like Louis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery, Stygian Echo goes out to blank spots on the map and brings back the ground truth. This photographer’s been there. What’s beyond that desiccated rat carcass and down the next corridor? What pattern of steel girders, rivets, industrial machinery, and rusting pipes lies ahead? What’s that shape in scrub along the dirt road crackling under tires? The rest of us admire the collection without the freezing cold, occasional flat tire, or hours of travel, far from restrooms and hot meals. We don’t hear the percussive echo of feet laden with lights and tripod descending the steps of musty, unlit stairwells whose walls are thick with spray paint.
