I've had an on-again/off-again fascination with photography as long as I can remember. My grandparents had an old twin-lens reflex, rollfilm camera that I'm not sure ever worked, because there was no film to be found for it (other than the one, certainly worthless, roll that was in there). That didn't keep me from running around when I was 7 years old pretending I was a photographer.
A little older, I took my junior high's photography classes and learned how to develop black and white film and prints. I shot for my high school newspaper. And then things went dormant.
As I started getting the chance to travel extensively once I entered my 30s, my interest in photography started to resurface. I wanted to do more than document where I was; I wanted to capture something unique.
It's in the last few years that I've really started focusing on technique, doing more than just shooting stuff that looked interesting but really thinking about what I was doing, and being more critical in the images I select to display. I've invested in good glass, software that helps me do what I want, learning said software, etc. Most importantly, I've got out and shot. Not as much as I'd like, but a lot more than I ever used to.
I'm hooked.
