Strathclyde University’s Archives and Special Collections is a unique learning and research resource open to all.

We hold the archives of the University, documenting its rich history from its foundation in 1796 as Anderson’s Institution, ‘a place of useful learning’, to the present day. We also hold the records of Jordanhill College of Education, which merged with the University in 1993. In addition, we have an internationally important range of archives and special collections. Highlights include the James ‘Paraffin’ Young collection of scientific and alchemical books from the 15th to the 19th centuries; the papers and personal library of John Anderson, 1726-1796, founder of Anderson’s Institution; and the papers of Sir Patrick Geddes, 1854-1932, biologist, sociologist and town planner.

Our areas of strength include science, technology and engineering; labour and political history; education; environmental health; investigative journalism; new towns and town planning; Glasgow history; Scottish topography, canals and Scottish tours; and mountaineering, travel and exploration.
