ARTIST STATEMENT

My interdisciplinary studio practice consists of designing and fabricating homebrew prototype machines, handheld tools and site specific image-based installation projects. Considered by some people as “hyper-masculine” or examples of “boy art”, my work thoughtfully glimpses at the unfolding aspects of masculinity through the visual cues of working class consciousness, cultural truisms, prototypes and customs. I employ traditions of performance art, kinetic sculpture and mark-making to consider how actions/processes such as burning rubber, engine revving and stereo thumping are used to communicate a sense of working-class kinship and residency. These everyday subversions are pared down in my work by building and demonstrating stylish petrol fired machines that generate tire smoke and sound through the output of torque, friction, heat, vibration and engine exhaust. The materials in my work reference Princess Auto and Canadian Tire as a means to concede to a type of lowbrow consumer glut that is bred from a vision of ‘ultimate’ performance and a yearning to tune and tweak. From a personal connection to a blue-collar lifestyle my artwork hints towards pastime activities like customization, modification and maintenance as insightful moments of spatial production and cultural expression.

I find Steven's work fascinating in the way he takes ordinary implements of suburban culture and morphs them into wicked, testosterone-fuelled exaggerations of manhood. I find Steven's work fascinating in the way he takes ordinary implements of suburban culture and morphs them into wicked, testosterone-fuelled exaggerations of manhood. I think that it's not a stretch of the imagination to envision an isle at Canadian Tire, or any other hardware store, that would sell these products. I know I'd secretly like to have one just to drive a neighbour totally insane. I always look forward to the next product that falls victim to Steven's transformations.

Steve Laurie's work is in your face and makes no bones about it. He uses the male stereotype of the testosterone driven competitor to address the nature of power and display in society. There is an element of futility in the machines that he makes in that they really only display power and spectacle of the gasoline charged engine. The futile attempts of Steve's constructed male image and machines to perform and not perform a function, is at once frightening, humorous and aesthetically pleasing. The burning of rubber using gasoline, both oil based products , both being burnt as it were, creates a negation that in my mind is suggestive of the circular nature of the display of power with power.
