I've taken photos as far back as I can remember - starting as a kid with a 110 camera and nicking my father's 35mm when I could get away with it. Mostly it was the ubiquitous snapshot, occasionally something slightly (very slightly) better. Over the years I had borrowed or purchased a number of cameras ranging from the semi-professional (Canon and Minolta SLRs) to the niche (Yashica Samurai Z) but eventually, "life" happened and photography took a back-seat to other things.

The Horse, in Detail

In 2002 I started dating (and for ten years, was married to) a local riding instructor/trainer - and as I started spending time around her and her horses, I found a passion for photography again. I've been shooting professionally, specializing in equestrian photography (show/event, farm, and sale photos), in the Mid-Eastern United States since the Spring of 2008, and since have had my images published in publications ranging from local newsletters to long-established national magazines, Olympian's websites, and gracing the walls and barns of numerous riders and owners. It's been a fun ride so far...

Magic

I don't know that this will ever be my primary career, since my day-job is considerably more lucrative than the median Photog's salary of $27,720 (per recent US employment data), but I believe that it's a great side-career to express and extend my creative side while providing quality images to equestrians, equine publications, and other horse-lovers.

Waxing philosophic: I firmly believe that creative professionals seem to get the short end of the stick in our modern society. We tend to judge value based on a a narrow view of technical expertise ("I can point a camera and take a photo as well as you, so what you do has little value.") This view disregards vision, creativity and other intangibles involved with creating a photograph. I wonder if this is evolutionary or cyclic, and if, as a society, we'll return to a period where art and music are considered a necessity in our daily lives.

I hope so.

For now, I'm continually working to improve both the finer technical points of my photography as well as the creative aspects, as these are both life-long endeavors.
