On my current work: I work in large and small scale paper cutting, drawing, and lino printing, with themes from Biblical text, poetry, plants, and plant symbolism.
On my ceramic work:
I graduated from Cornell College (Mount Vernon, IA) in 2007. I make non-functional coil-built ceramic vessels and other hand built works.
My sculptural work is inspired by rock formations of the Southwest, the small stones in my dad's rock collection, and organic forms and parts of the body. While some pieces are more obviously influenced by actual landscapes, others are influenced by other types of landscapes: the "landscape" of the body, and spaces I imagine.
Artist statement from my senior thesis
:
My work is about form and space. The shapes are inspired by the organic, the body, and by erosion-formed land and stone. Negative space is important—often times my pieces have unexpected openings and space between multiple legs and necks. When I build these pieces, it is like building a playground for the mind. When I look at them, I imagine being able to walk in and about them.
The vessels are constructed with narrow coils and indented with a dowel or hollow bamboo tool to create pattern and texture. They are finished with a red iron oxide stain.
I call the show “Landscapes” because each piece is either inspired by a real landscape (such as rock formations of the Southwest) or creates a landscape of sorts for the eye to explore and the mind to dwell.
