I am fascinated by human movement of every sort, but particularly dance. It’s beautiful to watch and very hard to translate fully into a static photograph. My dance photography tends to be documentation shots of a performance or rehearsal, publicity shots for a concert, or (my favorite) dance portraiture. The goal of my dance portraits is to represent the feeling of the dancer’s movement faithfully, and not necessarily just to make a nice image. If it feels familiar to the dancer, that’s when I know I got it right.
I am now beginning to make new dance photos after more than ten years of working with my existing film, and it will be interesting to see how my style will change. I truly appreciate all of the comments and email, the wonderful collaborations with dancers, and the amazing support I get from the Flickr community.
By day, I manage a number of cancer and AIDS research groups (including a creative services team) at a large Seattle non-profit. That means I have access to some pretty cool equipment, and I learn a lot from some very creative people, but it unfortunately keeps me too busy to shoot as much as I'd like.
