Matias del Campo born 1970 in Santiago, Chile, studied architecture at the University of Applied Arts Vienna (A)/ 2006 Research visit in Los Angeles (USA), Schindler Scholarship, MAK Artists and Architects-in-Residence Program/ guest professor at the Dessau Institute of Architecture (D) and the ESARQ, Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (E)/ curator Architectural Biennale Beijing, 2008 & 2010 South American Section. Co Curator of the exhibition Housing in Vienna, a survey of subsidized housing in Vienna. Co Author of the Study: Future Lifestyle Housing in Vienna. Architect of the Austrian Pavilion for the Shanghai Expo 2010. Founder of the architecture practice SPAN, together with Sandra Manninger in 2003.

The work of SPAN explores the opportunities present in the morphologies of advanced design techniques as point of departure for the design of architectural conditions, simultaneously exploring the discursive implications of the individual projects. Inherent qualities such as spatial articulation, components, organization, structure and circulation form the ground for a variety of speculations on novel spatial conditions. The sensorial and spatial experiences co-notated with the manifold qualities of contemporary, algorithm driven approaches -from their topological qualities to the distribution of components and patterns forming the structural body- are scrutinized for their architectural qualities. The practice investigates how intensive forces, including solar radiation, weather systems, acoustic forces and wind pressures can be used as means of formation for architectural bodies.
