HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

SolFlaps™ creator and avid golfer, Bill Hamilton, worked his way through college as a carpenter and has since spent years on the golf course openly exposed to the sun. Just like many of us growing up, Bill never worried about the future health risks that could develop as a result of prolonged exposure to the sun and its harmful UV rays. As an adult Bill began to take preventative measures to protect his skin, but the damage was done. In 2008 Bill was diagnosed with pre-melanomas on his ear. Thankfully Bill as able to have them removed. The reality of the diagnosis had a profound impact on Bill. The fear, pain and worry inspired him to become an advocate for skin cancer prevention.

For the next couple of years you could find Bill on the golf courses in and around the Charlottesville Virginia area, talking about his experience. He was easy to spot because of what he started wearing on the course. After his diagnosis and surgery Bill began wearing around his neck and ears what could only be described as a funky-looking blue rag. He would tuck this rag under his hat and let it drape down to provide shade for his neck and ears, two of the more highly exposed areas of a golfer’s body. Bill would share with curious inquirers about his experience and the importance of covering up in the sun. He would point out society’s general lack of awareness when it came to sun damage and the pain and fear that he went through. It was obvious that his diagnosis had changed his life, but there were more changes to come.

He didn't know it at the time but Bill's funky little rag eventually became just as talked about as his experiences and in many cases, more so. Over the next 2 years Bill would be asked countless times where he purchased his rag. At first it was comical, but seeds were being planted. Bill realized that he was sitting on an opportunity to promote prevention awareness through a simple little product that would get people talking and so SolFlaps™ with UV 50+ protection were born. As a compliment to other preventative exercises SolFlaps™ were developed to not only to protect one's neck and ears from, but as a way to promote prevention and protection from the sun in general.
