Sint-Lukas Brussels University College of Art and Design (UCAD) houses 6 educational programmes. They last either for 3 years (one-cycle or BA programmes) or 4 years (BA + MA). The one-cycle programmes cover, within the study area of industrial sciences and technology, "construction", and, within the study area of architecture, "interior design".
The two-cycle programmes are all art programmes at academic level. They concern audio-visual arts (film, video, television, animation), graphic and publicity design, photography and fine art. Apart from these, the Sint-Lukas Brussels University College of Art and Design also organises a teacher training programme leading towards the qualified teacher's degree in audio-visual and fine arts. All of the two-cycle programmes combine a wide and highly technical and practical training with the intellectual and academic development of artistic personalities and talents. From the second cycle on, students dispose of their own studio as long as individual places to work are available or necessary for their personal projects. The one-cycle programmes are mainly aimed at vocational training.
The history of the Sint-Lukas Brussels University College of Art and Design goes back to 1880. The first Sint-Lukas school in Brussels was founded on the basis of a Roman Catholic neo-gothic art philosophy and art practice. Although within Flanders and even abroad, the philosophical and pedagogical origins of all the Sint-Lukas art schools or Sint-Lukas schools of architecture are the same, today the UCADl Sint-Lukas Brussel is an autonomous institute of non-university higher education, accepting candidates of any philosophical conviction. In fact the UCAD Sint-Lukas Brussels is still the only autonomous art school in Flanders, defining independently its own educational and art policy. It has well over 750 students. The staff has more than 120 members, including academic, administrative, technical and art teaching personnel. The Hogeschool is situated within easy reach of Brussels North station and operates on two campuses.
Its location in Brussels makes all the artistic, cultural and social activities of this international and multicultural city available to students. Trough the "Sint-Lukas Stichting", the UCAD Sint-Lukas Brussels runs its own gallery for contemporary art and documents and archives all information on contemporary Flemish artists. Its library is one of the most important libraries for fine art in Brussels. The UCAD Sint-Lukas Brussels is a member of the European League of Institutes of the Arts (ELIA) and of Cilect (Centre International de liaison des écoles de cinéma et de télévision) and has also close contacts with other art schools all over Europe via the European LLP Programme.
