Hello. My name is Simon Rutter and I live in Portsmouth on the south coast of England, UK.

I specialise in documentary, urban and event photography but have experience in a wide range of other photographic genres including fine art, portraiture and light painting.

I have an unashamed love of photography.

My affair started when my father lent me his 35mm SLR camera and helped me to develop and print the images I had taken. I was fascinated with the mechanics of a clicking shutter, the blind dexterity needed to develop the film and the thrill of finally seeing an image gradually come to life as it sloshed around in a tray of smelly chemicals. Wow, that was real life magic to a 13 year old!

That was many years ago and the perennial consumers of time - work and family - meant my interest waned.

Now in my 40’s I have the opportunity to capture moments of time and create the images I want to create.

I constantly strive to learn and improve. I aim to make images that tell a story or evoke emotion. That capture life in all its guises.

I want the passion to be visible in my images.

I favour black and white, its timeless quality, focus on shape and form and its depth of contrasting tones helping me to achieve what I aim for in my images (although I do make forays into the world of colour…just so I keep a foot in the camp of reality…)

We have a unique chance to record life as it happens and make lasting memorable images - I want to fully embrace that wonderful opportunity.
