I was born in California in 1967, educated in Britain and studied English Literature at the University of Edinburgh.

I served in the British army with the Black Watch and the Queens’ Own Highlanders. After leaving the military I worked for The HALO Trust (www.halotrust.org) clearing land mines and unexploded ordnance in Cambodia, Kosovo, Abkhazia, Eritrea and Sri Lanka.

As Director of Landmine Action I set up and ran clearance projects in Western Sahara and Guinea Bissau. As co-Chair of the Cluster Munition Coalition I successfully campaigned for an international treaty to ban cluster bombs.

In 2014 I returned to the HALO Trust and have been instrumental in setting up programme stop clear IEDs in the Middle East.

I live in Glasgow with my wife the BBC Broadcaster Sarah Smith. I have two daughters, Maisy and Nelly
