The Science Initiative Group (SIG), based at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, NJ, USA, is dedicated to fostering science in developing countries. SIG's current project is the Regional Initiative in Science and Education (RISE).

RISE prepares PhD- and MSc-level scientists and engineers in sub-Saharan Africa through university-based research and teaching networks in selected disciplines. Our primary purpose is to strengthen science and engineering research and teaching in African universities by training new academic staff and upgrading the qualifications of existing staff. Our broader goal is to build capacity in science, technology and innovation as a key to economic development in sub-Saharan Africa.
