It's been a long time since I first encountered Kevin's wonderful photography, but I vividly remember being amazed by its diversity, sensitivity and intelligence. Here was a photographer who could turn the street into pure abstraction or present it as a rich, journalistic slice of life, full of meaning and provocation. Here was someone with a passionate, poetic connection to nature, a deeply serious photographer whose work overflowed with subversive humour, warmth and understanding. One could go on. And that is the point. There is such abundance here. And such generosity of thought, spirit and vision. This strikes me as especially important. Kevin's pictures are technically superb - that's obvious - but they come with a unique added value. As an historian he has a sense of the significant that informs all his work. It might be social change, a character on the street, a friend in the sunlight or just the play of shadow - but he catches the soul of the subject. Yet the word "catch" offends me. There is no sense of chance in these pictures - they are entirely the products of a powerful, distinctive sensibility and profound feeling. I feel honoured to share them and to call Kevin a friend.
