The State Historical Society of Iowa (SHSI) collects, preserves, and makes available the visual record of the state as part of its agency mission. The Special Collections section of the SHSI Library contains nearly half a million photographs representing a wide range of Iowa subject matter and communities, and includes specimens of photography in all of its historic forms--from daguerreotype to digital.

This website has been created to showcase some representative portions of the holdings that are preserved and made available for research at our Des Moines and Iowa City locations, and to make select images accessible for "virtual" reference. We do not respond to reference questions through this Flickr page, but invite you to contact us using the information below.
