Personal collections were the precursors of today's national and specialist museums and public galleries. The birth of cheap image reproduction in the late 19th and early 20th century spurred Malraux to propose a popular museum of images unbounded by institutional walls or wealth (The Museum without Walls). Today the Internet gives us access to multimedia resources from around the world... but individuals still collect extraordinary 'real' things that the rest of the world seldom sees. We started Curiosity Cabinet as a 21st century people's museum -- join us and share the extraordinary things you collect with the rest of the world!
