Update on Brian Callahan by Margaret Callahan on 2/18/2013
Dear Flickr friends: Brian's journey with prostate cancer has ended. He passed away peacefully at home on February 8th with myself and his daughters at his side. While I will miss Brian terribly, I am thankful that he is now at peace. I plan to keep Brian's site up and, while I am not skilled in this arena, will do my best to maintain it. I appreciate the love and support given to Brian throughout his participation with the Flickr community.
Well my friends, what was always a strong possibility, given the nature and severity of my prostate cancer, has come to pass. I have stage 4 cancer. There is a cancerous spot on my tailbone. The condition is currently incurable. My participation in FLICKR may be somewhat reduced, going forward. Thanks to all for your support and what you have taught me, and of course for your prayers and good wishes, so freely given through the course of my disease. I have much medical support as well, with new techniques that are prolonging the quality and length of life for those with my condition. I intend to be active as long as I can and happy with my dear Margaret and my family and many friends. With the amazing and beautiful world I live in and try to share in my photos as well as I can.
Update June 27, 2012
After reviewing some of the latest literature on my kind of cancer, my oncologist and I decided to have me go back on Lupron and start the new drug Zytiga. I just had a visit with my oncologist. My blood numbers are quite good and other vital signs are consistent with a chemotherapy recovery. The peripheral neuropathy is better, and I am learning to live with it. My hair is coming back, but so far I am keeping it shaved. Thanks again for all your support and prayers.
Update April 17, 2012
My 30 week course of chemotherapy is done as of Thursday, April 5th. The blood numbers, CT and bone scans show that the cancer is stable to reduced. I am taking a treatment holiday, and we will see what happens. I will have monthly checks with my oncologist and scans every 3 months. I am still quite fatigued and am dealing with some peripheral neuropathy. My hands and feet are numb. It is hard to button my shirts and similar activities. I'm taking neurontin to help. I hope it clears up, but they tell me it may be permanent. I'm still quite bald and may keep the look, even if the hair comes back.
Thanks again for all of your prayers and support.
Update November 22, 2011
I am currently undergoing chemotherapy in a clinical trial for a new drug "Curstursin". In conjunction with the Docataxel/Prednisone combination normally given for people with my condition, it is supposed to enhance and prolong the effect of the oher two drugs. I am also getting a blood builder shot the day after the beginning of each 3 week cycle. For the first week I feel really lousy, the second better and near normal on the third. All of this has has a considerable, positive effect on my PSA which is the best indicator for the progression of my disease. I am getting a bone scan on December 7, and a CT scan on December 6 that should reveal more about my prognosis. Thanks as always for your prayers and support.

I am proud to say that Brian has been a Flickr contact of mine for nearly 2 years now. I never fail to enjoy his work and his ability to see a picture, compose it, and turn it into an image we can all share, it’s a talent we aspire to but rarely reach at Brian’s level. The pictures you see here are inspirational whether you are a photographer or just enjoy seeing photographic art. On a personal level, while I have never met Brian face to face, he has been supportive and I am very happy to class him as a good friend. Long may this go on. Thank you Brian, Trev

Brian's got the eye and talent of a proper nature/birding photographer. It takes a great deal of patience, tenacity and skill to capture birds in their natural environment, you've got to research, track, spot the bird from some distance and bring the camera to bear fast. And all this is shown in his wildlife photographer, each image colourful, well composed and perfectly sharp where it needs to be, even from long range. Furthermore he's always willing to lend moral support and kind words of encouragement to the works I produce and to the groups that I manage, Brian is a great Flickr buddy to have.
