Since retiring in 2007, I have covered sports photography primarily for nearby Crenshaw High School in Los Angeles -- mostly basketball, football, track-and-field, and baseball, but also occasionally including other sports, some community activities, and just plain hanging-out. There are more than 150,000 publicly-visible photos in over 1200 albums of photographs (and occasionally video clips) from games, matches, practices, and other public events. The website, now 18 years old, has had more than 38 million views.

I own the internet domains "shawdog.com" and "shawdog.org", which both automatically forward to these Flickr pages whose purpose is to provide FREE pictures of as many Crenshaw athletes as possible. Although the emphasis is on Crenshaw, there are also thousands of pictures of athletes from the many schools against which Crenshaw competes both in CIF City Section and CIF-State, as well as some events where Crenshaw is not involved, such as L.A. City Section playoff games, junior college tournaments, and community-interest activities.

My pictures have appeared in the Los Angeles Times, the Wave Newspapers, the Los Angeles Sentinel, the Wall Street Journal, and ESPN Magazine.

Here are two L.A. Times articles specifically about my work::

Almost all of my images are uploaded with a maximum of approximately 2048 or 4096 pixels on the long side, which will give adequate resolution for personal-use prints up to 8x12. The images are usually formatted for printing as either 4x6 (8x12) prints or 8x10 prints. You can look at the EXIF data for any pic to determine the intended format. Pix in the 8x10 format will be (approximately) 1638x2048 or 3277x4096 pixels (1 x 1.25), whereas 8x12's will be 1365x2048 or 2730x4096 (1 x 1.5). A "panorama" free-sizing is sometimes used -- these images will always have a filename ending in "P". I also sometimes make square croppings suitable for use on Instagram (with filenames ending in "S" or "T").

You can view the EXIF data for any of my images for full details on cameras, lenses, and exposure information. There are also a few of my images from the "pre-digital" era that I have digitally scanned from film.

Very rarely, I include images taken by photographer friends when I have been unable to attend an event in person and want to make pictures of Crenshaw athletes available to them. These have filenames like XXxxxxxA, where the first two characters are the initials of the contributing photographer.

The website can also be seen organized as "Collections", that is, grouped by a particular sport and season, using this URL:

Flickr.com allows you to directly order prints of any image (you will have to sign-up for a Flickr account but the signup is free). You can also download the images and send the jpg file to one of the many online print services such as Walgreens or EZPrints.

A BIG "THANK YOU!": In 2006, Crenshaw alumnus MarQuis Davis turned me on to flickr.com as a way to distribute these pix, and I cannot thank him enough. "Good lookin' out, MarQuis!"

The athletic mural that appears at the top of my main album page was once painted on the north exterior side of the Crenshaw gym by artist Patrick Johnson. Although long gone, it can be seen here: www.flickr.com/photos/shawdog/3450862519/in/album-7215761...
