Shakespeare Press Museum
Drag to set position!
Shakespeare Press Museum is a fully equipped and operating nineteenth century printing shop. Student run, the museum offers tours, teaches letterpress classes, and keeps the museum open regularly. Students, Cal Poly staff, visitors, and community members are welcome to visit or to join Friends of Shakespeare Press Museum, the organization that serves to maintain and promote the museum.
The collection was established by Charles "Shakespeare" Palmer in the late 1930s as an example of the 19th century California country print shop. The collection moved to Cal Poly, home of the "School for Country Printers," in the late 1960s. Over the past forty years the collection continued to grow, and currently contains over 500 cases of type, two Washington hand presses, Campbell Country Cylinder Press, tabletop and treadle platen presses, many perforators and paper cutters, and related tools of the printing trade.
