ARTIST STATEMENT
The narrative is the most important aspect of my art. The juxtapositions and ironies of life intrigue me. I strive to explore the unexplainable and continue to struggle in exposing hidden emotions through art. I use texture, shapes, shadow, and light to convey a message and find meaning for myself. I find beauty flawed and perfection nonexistent. The human body is an endless source of inspiration for me. I see the human figure as the most ideal subject we have in art. My work is about the beautiful and the hideous. Incongruity and ambiguity are present in my life and my art work.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Born in 1974 to artisan parents, Sergio A. Delgado was born an artist.
"Leaving aside the mysteries and the inequities of human talent, brains, taste, and reputations, the matter of art in photography may come down to this: it is the capture and projection of the delights of seeing; it is the defining of observation full and felt."
-- Walker Evans
His father was a welder and his mother would do textiles. He’s been drawing since the time he could hold a crayon. Sergio’s earliest known piece was drawn when he was about 4 years-old. His mother named him after his uncle who was a talented inventor, but was placed in an asylum for the insane later in his life. His mother’s brother was an accomplished oil painter and he would spend summers at his house learning and watching his uncle paint landscapes and portraits.
Aside from four years of high school art classes and having won the recognition of artist of the year for each year, and a few semesters in the Fine Arts Department at Mountain View College, Dallas, Texas, he is self-taught. Originally he intended to pursue a career as a painter, which allowed him to keep his compositions rooted in a painters mind frame. He began photographing his family as reference material for paintings.
His artistic aspirations were so tightly focused on his ideas and concepts from such an early age that traditional studies left him dissatisfied. The school of greatest learning for him has been The School of Trial and Error, where he is a permanent and voracious student, and the challenge of making each piece better than the one created before it.
His main influences, especially from his early works, were photographers such as Joel Peter Witkins, Nan Goldin and Robert Frank. His strengths as an artist comes from his choice of subjects and the unconventionally fresh and original way he depicts them. His subject range is vast - ranging from abstract, human portraiture to still life and landscape. Through the efforts of self-study and hard work, he continues to hone his artistic skills. He has an extensive body of work developed through many years of dedication.
His work shares some attributes of minimalism, surrealism, Art Brut, pop, and abstract expressionism, yet he describes himself as an obsessive artist. His artwork is infused with autobiographical, psychological, and sexual content. His previous shows have included paintings, sculptures, performance art and video installations.
Although his subject matter is often times confrontational, it is always fresh and vivid. He loves art for what it reveals about our existence. He is always grateful for the opportunity to share his artwork with a wider audience. In addition to several art shows, his lurid unfettered work is available online through his main website.

Inspiration, beauty in everything he does, unique, a 6th sense for composition, even...a photographer I admire and even wish to emulate. Thank you for sharing your visions.
Mr Sergio is a true explorer who is letting the ordinary sofaman take a glimpse in adventures that is very hard to picture and that is surreal and thoughtprovoking art.

Sergio is fascinating to me. Some of his work, at first glance, can be fairly disturbing...However, when you go deeper...beyond the obvious image, his art is incredibly fascinating. He makes you think, and through his work he makes you face things you fail to observe in your everyday life. Shocking, honest, deep, & thought-provoking are just a few words I would use to describe his work. As a person, Sergio has always been very kind & quick to respond to any correspondence. He & his work are both incredible!
