Born and raised in the Southern Tier, State Senator Lea Webb is a proud graduate of Binghamton public schools and is a first-generation graduate of SUNY Broome and Binghamton University, where she earned a degree in Neuroscience. In 2008, she was the first African American and youngest person ever elected to serve on the Binghamton City Council. She worked to remove blighted properties and supported their redevelopment into homes to address food desert issues by establishing community gardens.

Prior to joining the State Senate, she worked as an educator at Binghamton University where she developed diversity and inclusion training and programs for faculty, staff, and students.

Senator Webb was elected in November of 2022 as a member of the New York State Senate, part of the first all-woman class in the history of the New York Senate. She is the first black woman to represent New York’s 52nd district, which includes Cortland County, Tompkins County and part of Broome County including the City of Binghamton and Town of Union. Senator Webb is dedicated to making New York more equitable for working families, small businesses, and ensuring that everyone has a better quality of life.

She serves as Chair of the Senate Women’s Issues Committee and is proud to be leading the fight with her Senate colleagues to ensure that New York remains a sanctuary for reproductive freedom. In addition, she is a member of the Agriculture, Health, Higher Education, Procurement & Contracts, Mental Health, and Cities 2 committees.

Raised in a proud union family and a union member herself, she has passed legislation supporting equal pay for women, creating a city-based human rights commission, establishing a city-wide climate action plan, and supporting small business development and job creation.

Senator Webb is a champion for the Southern Tier in Albany. She is fighting for equitable and fair public school funding, a strong local economy, and support for our working families and small businesses.
