I like photography, but I don't consider myself a photographer; or at least, not a person who enjoys the typical trappings of photography and all of the associated characterisations. I'd describe myself as an erratically enthusiastic hobbyist; someone who is sometimes inspired, by a play of light, colour and texture, to take a snapshot.

Photography for me is about expressing a thought through image. It's about sharing a point of view or philosophy via light and shade. If that sounds pretentious, it's not meant to be !

I have little interest in the mathematics of photography, partly because I have no mind for numeric complexity, and partly because it's the pure perception of an image in a moment of inspiration that is important to me rather than how heavily it can be processed.

I'm not quite sure what to feel about heavy processing of images. It's fair to say that, when younger, I was absolutely set against any cropping or processing whatsoever. But when I think about it, that was also when I used film cameras on the odd occasion to take happy snaps, and the process of scanning the image was just too much work at the time. With the age of digital, post processing is so much easier. Still, philosophically, I think I'm turning back to being against any sort of processing (apart from the odd light crop, perhaps). I'm not a fan of Instagram or making images look vintage, etc. I prefer the purity of the original image.

My current camera is the Sony RX100. It's a lovely camera and produces excellent images for a compact. I've also owned a few Canon Powershots. My very first digital camera was a Kodak DC3200.

Right now I am enjoying the very different challenge of night photography. I certainly won't pretend to be an expert, as there's so much to learn ! I enjoy the seclusion of the activity, while also being aware that there are some very real risks attached to it in terms of being out in the open in quiet locations at night.

If you can relate to anything I've said or even find it interesting, I'm happy to connect and share. Saying something meaningful is more important to me than being popular.
