My fascination with sea glass or ocean gems as I like to call them started in the summer of 2005 after having moved to Bathurst, New Brunswick from Timmins, Ontario as a result of a job transfer for my husband, Doug. We live only a few minutes from the beach and would enjoy daily strolls by the seashore. I was immediately drawn to the beauty and individual uniqueness in the seashells and shards of glass nestled in the sand. When family and friends visit, we share our passion for the shore by rounding them up to go beachcombing. Sometimes we seem to come upon a perfect day for sea glass and other days not. On the off days there were always shells, stones, driftwood, etc… Over the summer, I had accumulated over five jars of ocean gems. One day Doug asked what I was going to do with all the sea glass. I hadn’t thought of doing anything with them except to keep them in the jars. That’s when I searched to web and to my surprise found out that there are some very artistic and talented people using beach glass in their creations. This sparked my interest and here I am creating Ocean Gem Jewellery. Each piece of ocean gem has been lovingly found on the Bay of Chaleur. The Bay of Chaleur, for the second year in a row, has been voted one of the ten most beautiful Bays in the world. The gems are used as I find them except to clean them with baby oil to bring out their translucent features. I would never think of drilling sea glass, it is my belief that this would destroy the integrity of the gem of the ocean. Some people believe that sea glass has healing and magical qualities. Mother Nature has an amazing way of using the tides and sand to recycle discarded or sunken bottles, dishes, vases into gems of the ocean. Sea glass can be centuries old even originating from old shipwrecks! No two gems are alike each is unique! The most common shape for sea glass is the triangle with the circle being the rarest. Sea glass is becoming scarcer with the prevalent use of plastics and our growing environmental awareness.
