My name is Scott and I currently reside in Southern Oregon. My hobbies are photography, backpacking, camping, hiking, rafting, and National Park travel. I am a Portland Trailblazers and Oregon Ducks fan. Track & Field is the sport that I'm most interested in. I was a shotput and discus thrower for about 10 years. I started in 7th. grade and worked hard through high school earning a scholarship to the University of Nevada-Reno. Unfortunately, they dropped the men's track program after my first year.

I still love watching the shot and discus as a spectator, but miss competing in it.

I just recently became interested in landscape photography in the last 4 years. My inspiration for getting into landscape photography started after a first trip to Yosemite National Park. I wanted to capture the grandeur of this special place so photography is the route I chose. Even though I live about 555 miles from Yosemite Valley, I usually visit the park 3 times a year or so. It really made quite an impression on me to say the least!

Our most recent adventure involved a trip to the parks of the Southwest. We first stayed at Arches N.P. and did a side trip to Canyonlands N.P. It was right when the movie "The Lone Ranger" was being filmed near Moab Utah. Really exciting!!! Our next stop would be at Capitol Reef N.P. We didn't have time to stay very long but just in the short amount of time we were there, we were really impressed.

The next stop was at Bryce Canyon N.P. for several nights. After Bryce we headed to Zion N.P. for several more nights. This included a quick jaunt to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. What a view!!!

After a really long drive we ended up in Sequoia & Kings Canyon N.P.'s Our necks were quite sore from staring up at the Giant Sequoias. What an amazing place!!! It was hard to go home after all of that :)

Our next big adventure was to Glacier National Park. What a beautiful place!!! The canyons and streams that all the glaciers carved were simply amazing. We spent two weeks in Glacier N.P. on this trip, splitting our time between the West side of the Continental Divide and the East side. Each side was quite different from the other! The West side is where most of the precipitation occurs and the East side is a lot drier. The East side opens up into the Central Plains of the Midwest.

To truly enjoy Glacier as much as possible a lot of hiking/backpacking is required, not to mention the thousands of feet of elevation gain that is required to reach some of the more exciting destinations. Also, get to the park as soon as you can cause the glaciers that helped create it are melting at an alarming rate :( They estimate by the year 2030 the glaciers will essentially be gone! If you want to see hundreds of glaciers right now, visit North Cascades National Park in Northern Washington. It has roughly 350 glaciers within its boundaries!

It was really a blessing to see Glacier N.P. with my Dad and someday I would like to return :) I highly recommend it!

The next park on our list we were able to visit in late May/early June! Olympic National Park is amazingly diverse. You can see three drastically different ecosystems all within the 922,651 acres of the park! Amazing!!!

The first ecosystem you encounter going from West to East is the beautiful Pacific Ocean. The ocean section of Olympic N.P. is a 70 mile strip of the Olympic Wilderness. The only places that a road comes into contact with this section of beach is at the Northern and Southern terminus of the Wilderness and one point near the middle. The beach is essentially a long wilderness trail.

The next ecosystem you get to is the only temperate rain forest in the country. When they say Rainforest..............they mean RAINFOREST!!! It averages up to 240 inches of precipitation in a year! This old growth forest is just covered with moss that hangs down several feet from the branches.

The third ecosystem in Olympic N.P. is the glacier covered Olympic Mountains. The centerpiece of these beautiful mountains is Mount Olympus. While it may only be 7,980 feet in elevation, this peak has some truly massive glaciers on it. The amount of precipitation that Mount Olympus receives is also staggering; 144 inches a year, not bad for a peak that is well below 10,000 feet in elevation and is right next to a rainforest!!! Mount Olympus and the rest of the Olympic Mountains can be seen at the amazing overlook of Hurricane Ridge.

The trip to Olympic N.P. with my Dad was a great experience. We have started quite a tradition with our National Park tours. One of these days I hope we can talk my Mom in to going on one of our National Park adventures :) I can't wait till the next............................Death Valley N.P.

 

When it comes to photography, I am mostly interested in landscape, but I also like macro and wildlife as well. I would like to get into sports photography sometime in the near future, with track & field, football, and basketball as my subjects.
