Martin was Education Officer for Essex Wildlife Trust at Fingringhoe Wick Nature Reserve and Conservation Centre near Colchester in Essex.

He developed a unique programme of educational activity days for schools and during school holidays he ran Wildlife Discovery Days. In 1987 he created his first Big Bug Show which he later developed into The Big Bug Experience.

In 2003, after 15 years with the Trust, Martin decided to leave to Launch Martin Rapley - Experience Science Live!
