"The feeling is that we are so caught up in the everyday routiness of it all – slicing tomatoes and filling out forms and waiting in lines and doing laundry and grocery shopping – that we forget how to use what we’ve been given: our eyes, our ears, our most basic senses. We become blind to the glory of a sunset and the changing show of leaves. We become deaf to the throaty purity of children’s voices. We’ve been spoiled really. We have the belief that we’ve seen it all and heard it all before and it becomes a competition of sorts; each thing we bear witness to must outdo that which preceded it. We are lost within days of living this distracting life, capable of only moments, of single seconds of true appreciation and connection."
In addition to considering myself a photographer, I am also a writer. That bit above is from a short story of mine but so appropriate for my photographic work as well. While I majored in photography years ago, life took me on a different path into publishing, public relations and marketing, then into freelance work - website and corporate communications design - and now, finally into adapted recreation with special needs children.
When digital photography came around, I bought my first camera and a new world of photography opened up to me. I now explore and take more photographs than ever before - photographs that went largely unshared. A friend on flickr, Olga Gerrard - a wonderful, creative photographer herself - finally convinced me to join by giving me the gift of flickr. She has been and continues to be an inspiration to me... and my photography.
I continue to explore... to believe that no matter how many times I see something, each time is unique and different., not necessarily "better".. and my hope is to show this with my photography.
