San Francisco Bay Area photographer Gary Schatan has been observing and documenting the ‘Urban Landscape’ found in and around the West Coast. Schatan first gained attention in the 1980s as part of a generation of young photographers who questioned and expanded two seemingly fixed categories: landscape and documentary photography. Since that time, he has continued to draw his inspiration from the aesthetics of the everyday, turning the least monumental of subjects — automobiles, advertisements, and suburban environments — into a kind of personal poetry. Schatan considers himself a kind of passive observer capturing compelling images as he finds them. He enjoys sharing the spontaneity and honesty of his snapshots; you will always find a thread of wry humor running through his artwork.
