Spartanburg Community College started Summer STEM DAY camps in 2015. The goal of these camps is to bring more awareness to the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields and to ignite a passion for younger children to pursue such careers.
The Mad Scientists of SCC are Brandon Kinley, Amy Moore, Jim Poole, and Linda K. Schmidt
They organize and develop the activities of the Mad Scientists Camps. Some of the activities include water rockets, catapults, gummy bear sacrifice, wind bags, film canister explosions, soda geysers, string art, rocket engines, baking soda rockets, colored smoke, elephant toothpaste and much more. The most popular camp is the BYOA (Bring your own Adult) Camp, where children 8-11 years of age bring an adult with them to participate in the activities together.
These one-day camps at SCC’s Central Campus in Spartanburg, SC focus on STEM by allowing your child to embrace the wonders of learning outside of the classroom! From start to finish of the camps, the students are creating, building and experimenting. Because students are out of school, summer is the ideal time to enroll in a day full of explosive fun. In this one-day camp, students will investigate and experience this fascinating world of STEM inside a lab and outside in the sun, because sometimes learning should not be restricted by walls.
